Kai Patterson did not meet his father until he was 9 years old, because his father initially would not accept that Kai was his son and travelled throughout Europe as a producer without paying child support to Kai Patterson's mother.  Kai's grandparents immediately knew that Kai was their grandson, because Kai looked identical to Kai's father as an infant child. 

 Although Kai's father did not provide child support for his son, Kai's grandparents embraced Kai as their grandson and provided some financial support, in an attempt to compensate for their son's negligence.  Although their support did help Kai Patterson's mother, it did not enable Kai to receive the quality of life as a child he should have received, like millions of children in America.
